18th birthday treat from the Echo

When Yvonne Schofield turned 18, there was only one present she wanted – a trip in a helicopter.

But her mum, Barbara Drinkwater, could not find a helicopter operator who was willing to take Yvonne as a passenger, because the teenager has cerebral palsy.

So Barbara turned to her local evening newspaper, the Gloucestershire Echo, and they published her appeal. It prompted an offer of a 60-minute sight-seeing trip from High Wycombe company Flightworks.

Bosses at the firm said they had been thinking of running days for people with disabilities. Now they plan to run monthly events with discounted rates for disabled groups.

Yvonne loved every minute of her trip over London and thanked the Echo for making her dream come true.
