£100,000 target forWalk of Life

The Leicester Mercury is backing the annual ‘Rainbows Walk of Life’ event, in a bid to fill the pot of gold at the end of it even more than last year.

Around £96,000 was raised for the Loughborough-based Rainbows Children’s Hospice last June, and organisers are hoping to top the £100,000 mark this time.

The event, on Sunday, June 10, will see more than 2,000 sponsored walkers take part in the 15-mile trek around Leicester.

Around £1m a year is needed by the hospice to provide the care and support the children need.

Already the organisers of the county’s biggest annual community fund-raising event are predicting a record turn-out.

Veteran hotline volunteer, Andy Howitt, (73), has been manning the phones for the past four events.

He said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic event. Everyone is wishing one another across the finishing line. It is a special thing to be a part of.”

The sponsored walk starts and finishes in Victoria Park, Leicester and takes in Abbey Park, Braunstone Park and Knighton Park on the way.
