Meanwhile the Westminster gravy train keeps steaming ahead, with no buffers even remotely in sight. As well as copping for an 11 per cent rise which will take their pay to £55,000, MPs are now demanding an increase in their office expense allowance.

They already get £51, 572 in allowances. They want this increasing to £70,000 for staff with another £14,000 for “incidentals”. The mind boggles.

This has got to be the biggest rip-off of all time. Get elected by a handful of political activists, give your wife a job as your secretary and then sit back and watch the money roll in.

I wouldn’t mind so much if they were doing a decent job, but the only sensible bit of legislation in the NuLabour manifesto was dropped from the Queen’s Speech because of lack of time. I refer, of course, to the Bill allowing pubs, clubs and restaurants the right to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

This would have been very popular amongst the ordinary, working people who NuLabour once represented, particularly those hard-working souls who toil on night shifts and have little or no social life because everywhere is shut.

Sadly, that gets sacrificed in favour of a Bill which will further reform the House of Lords so that Tony will be able to get his own way on politically-correct favourites like banning fox hunting.

No wonder 40 per cent of the voters stayed at home, opened a can of beer, and watched Emmerdale instead.

You wouldn’t catch me jumping in the pool with either of those two.
