Yorkshire Evening Post named best daily

The Yorkshire Evening Post has been named Daily Newspaper of the Year at the Yorkshire Press Awards.

The award was one of five which the newspaper collected at the event, which was held at the Thorpe Park Hotel and Spa in Leeds.

Judges described the title as “exciting and in touch with its readers”.

Evening Post journalists Anne Pickles and Paul Dews were also triumphant, with Anne named Yorkshire Journalist of the Year, Columnist of the Year and Feature Writer of the Year, and Paul named Daily Sports Writer of the Year.

Weekly Newspaper of the Year was the Wakefield Express, edited by Mark Bradley, and Express photographer Andrew Bellis was named Weekly Photographer of the Year.

Guests were entertained by Sir Bernard Ingham, former Press sceretary to Margaret Thatcher, who warned them to avoid “spin and bluster” and to concentrate on “real” reporting.

The event was sponsored by Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Forward.
