Work experience and £3,000 up for grabs at student journalism awards

Work experience at the Mirror and up to £3,000 in prize money is up for grabs at this year’s Student Journalism Awards.

Run by the National Union of Students and backed by the Daily Mirror, the competition is open to students writing for their university or college newspaper, and will see prizes handed out in 13 categories – including best newspaper and best reporter.

There are also new categories this year for Best Student Investigative Journalism and Best Student Critic, as well as a new competition – the ‘Butlins Student Travel Challenge’ – which invites students to produce work based on their holidays in Britain.

NUS national secretary James Lloyd said: “Student journalism continues to go from strength to strength, often setting the news agenda both locally and nationally.

“The quality and professionalism of the work produced belies the minimum resources that many papers have and is a testament to the time and effort so many students commit to their publications.

The National Student Journalism Awards remain the pinnacle of the student media calendar and we look forward to receiving a high standard of entries across the board.”

Mirror editor Richard Wallace added: “Student newspapers are the breeding ground for the next generation of national newspapers. The experience gained on a student newspaper is invaluable and we are delighted to be playing our part in nurturing that talent.”

Judges includes Mirror Group political editor David Seymour; editor of Closer magazine Jane Johnson, ITN’s Alistair Stewart, Heat magazine’s Boyd Hilton and Andy Bell, deputy editor of Panorama who is also a former winner.

The closing date for entries is July 15, and winners will be announced during a ceremony in London on November 12. All shortlisted entrants will two free tickets to the event.
