Weekly newspapers of the year revealed

The wealth of talent amongst the weekly newspaper industry was recognised last night as the best of the best gathered for the Newspaper Society’s Weekly Newspaper Awards 2004.

Editors, executives, journalists and photographers from across the UK attended a glittering final at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, near Coventry, to hear who had won each of the 33 categories rewarding the best in advertising and editorial from paid-for and free newspapers in the past year.

The overall winner of the best paid-for weekly newspaper of the year award was The Wokingham Times, which had earlier picked up the prize for the best paid-for weekly in the south east region.

In the free weekly newspaper of the year category Kent on Sunday won through, after earlier picking up the title in its region.

Other winners included Richard Birch, from the Western Gazette, who was named best news journalist on a paid-for weekly, and Charlotte Evans from the Great Barr Observer/Sutton Coldfield Observer, who picked up the same award in the free newspaper category.
