Weekly newspaper awards are open for entries

A call has gone out from The Newspaper Society for entries to its prestigious Weekly Newspaper Awards.

The journalism and advertising awards will be presented at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel on November 30 – and the deadline to enter is October 13.

All paid-for and free weeklies are eligible to enter, with 18 editorial categories to battle for.

The organisers say entries should focus on the service that local weekly newspapers give to their communities and “the all-round look, feel, empathy and relevance of the title”.

Community campaigns championed by newspapers are recognised in the Newspaper Community Award, while the Newspaper Campaigning Award rewards awareness issues and reader action on a local campaign.

There a whole range of regional awards available for the best weekly, free weekly, with the top prizes of national Paid-For Weekly Newspaper of the Year and Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year up for grabs.

Individual success is recognised with Best News Journalist and Best Feature Journalist categories, with a special award for Innovative Person of the Year.

David Kerr, chairman of sponsors, Clacksons, said: “As an industry we need to keep our consumers and our advertising customers aware of the significant role that our products have, and will continue to have, within the communities we serve. These awards are the opportunity for the industry to highlight this involvement.

“The cornerstone of the regional press industry remains that of the weekly newspaper sector, and we are again proud to be associated, with this showcase of the finest examples of this fundamental element of everyone’s community.”
