Top student journalists honoured

The cream of Scottish student journalism has been honoured by The Herald.

The winners of the paper’s Scottish Student Press Awards were revealed during an awards lunch at the CCA in Glasgow, chosen from a record number of entries.

Herald editor Mark Douglas-Home, who was also chairman of the judges, said: “The awards were extremely competitive this year, as there were many good entries, and it was difficult to choose winners in the various categories.”

The winners are:

Student Journalist of the Year
Helen Pidd, Edinburgh University

Student photographer of the year
Susie Amos, Glasgow University

Best news writer
John Jelley, St Andrews University

Best features writer
Helen Pidd, Edinburgh University

Best sports section
The Saint (St Andrews University)

Newspaper/magazine of the year (design)
Glasgow University Guardian

Newspaper/magazine of the year
The Saint (St Andrews University)

Helen Pidd, winner of the Student Journalist of the Year title, received £500 and will embark on a 12-week paid placement at The Herald.

The Best Newspaper/Magazine category winner received £400, while the other five categories each received £300.
