Top award for the News

The Scarborough Evening News has scooped the top award in the Oscars of the charity world with its New May Lodge Appeal.

The appeal, which has raised £250,000 for a new resource and respite centre for children with learning disabilities, triumphed in the best media category of the Challenge to Care Awards.

The Evening News was praised for harnessing the fundraising potential of Scarborough, and at the ceremony in London, editor David Penman and deputy news editor Heather Peters saw the paper’s headlines flashed on to a screen while the appeal’s achievements were read out.

Mr Penman said: “We were delighted to win the award but would not have been able to accept it without the support of the people of Scarborough.

“It is thanks to the tireless support and generosity of our readers that £250,000 was raised and a new May Lodge built.”

The Challenge to Care Awards were organised by NCH, the charity the Evening News teamed up with for the appeal.

The award came at the same time the appeal was praised in a national trade magazine, The Charity Times. The article praises the work of the regional press and explains how the appeal was launched and run.
