The Citizen in crowned Newspaper of the Year

The Citizen has been crowned Regional Newspaper of the Year at this year’s Newspaper Sales and Promotions Awards.

The Gloucester-based title won over judges at the Newspaper Society event, who said the paper “punches well above its weight in a small city”.

The award was one of more than 30 handed out during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, which was attended by more than 300 people.

Other winners included the Bristol Evening Post, which scooped two top editorial awards – for Community Newspaper of the Year (Daily/Sunday) and Campaigning Newspaper of the Year (Daily/Sunday) for its One in Four Cancer Campaign, which judges said was “well executed and tackled a difficult subject”.

And in the individual categories, the Hull Daily Mail’s Rick Lyon was named Journalist of the Year, while Jonathan McCambridge from The Belfast Telegraph was named Young Journalist of the Year and Rob Norman from the Western Mail was crowned Photographer of the Year.

More than 20 sales and promotion awards were also presented at the event, which recognises the best newspaper sales initiatives, promotions ideas and editorial content.
