Talented North East news staff to compete for prizes

The best of the regional press in the North East is set to compete for a host of prizes at next month’s Tom Cordner Transco North East Press Awards.

More than 60 journalists and publications have been shortlisted in a range of categories from Photographer of the Year to Exclusive of the Year.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Newcastle Civic Centre on May 15.

Now in their 23rd year, the awards are open to newspapers and their staff in an area from Northumberland to North Yorkshire.

They began as a tribute to the nurturing of trainee journalists by former Hartlepool Mail journalist Tom Cordner, who died at 38 in 1976.

This year’s shortlist is below. Prizes for North East Newspaper of the Year, North East Weekly Newspaper of the Year and North East Journalist of the Year will also be handed out on the night.
