The Evening Times in Glasgow has been named Newspaper of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards.
It picked up the title during a ceremony at the Glasgow Radisson SAS Hotel, as judges praised its “self-confidence and self-awareness”.
The newspaper, and its journalists David Leask and John McCann, also picked up the prize for Campaign of the Year, for its Hands off Yorkhill fight to save a local hospital.
Judges said of the paper: “It knows exactly what its job is and is completely at ease with its readership.
“It crusades for the community with purpose and pride and in doing so punches above its weight. Its awarding-winning entry was a classic textbook guide on how to conduct a newspaper campaign.”
Other winners on the night included feature writer Catherine Deveney, who picked up the prize for Arts/Entertainment Writer of the Year, along with the overall title of Journalist of the Year, for her work for Scotland on Sunday.
The Herald was also a big winner, picking up five top individual prizes as Lloyd Smith was named News Photographer of the Year, Ian McConnell was named Financial/Business Writer of the Year, Michael Tierney was named Feature Writer of the Year, Graham Spiers was named Sports Feature Writer of the Year and Bill McArthur was crowned Cartoonist of the Year.
