Scottish media party as prizes are handed out

The Evening Times in Glasgow has been named Newspaper of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards.

It picked up the title during a ceremony at the Glasgow Radisson SAS Hotel, as judges praised its “self-confidence and self-awareness”.

The newspaper, and its journalists David Leask and John McCann, also picked up the prize for Campaign of the Year, for its Hands off Yorkhill fight to save a local hospital.

  • Evening Times editor Charles McGhee accepting the Newspaper of the Year award from Charles Wilson
  • Judges said of the paper: “It knows exactly what its job is and is completely at ease with its readership.

“It crusades for the community with purpose and pride and in doing so punches above its weight. Its awarding-winning entry was a classic textbook guide on how to conduct a newspaper campaign.”
