Reward for Commonwealth Games coverage

Coverage of the Commonwealth Games won The Scotsman a series of press awards.

The newspaper was awarded the prize for Best Coverage, in the Bank of Scotland Commonwealth Games Press Awards. It was rewarded for its comprehensive reporting, analysis and pictures from the event, held in Manchester.

Two sports writers from the paper were also named as winners of individual awards.

Chief sports writer Stuart Bathgate won Best Feature Award for “Farewell to track and field of dreams”, and sports writer Jonathan Coates lifted the Best Event Report Award for his piece on the men’s 400m freestyle swimming final.

Sports editor Donald Walker said: “It’s a tribute to all the hard work put in by our writers in Manchester and, of course, by the rest of the sports desk team in Edinburgh.

“In many ways, the Commonwealth Games represents the very essence of Scottish sport which is why we took the 2002 Games so seriously.”

Scotsman editor Iain Martin said: “I’m delighted that our excellent coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester has been recognised.”
