Regional titles shortlisted for Race Awards

The Yorkshire Evening Post and the Birmingham Post will battle it out later this month for a coveted Race in the Media Award.

The two newspapers have been shortlisted in the Local Newspapers category of the competition, which is run by the Commission for Racial Equality.

Journalists including Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Moira Stewart and actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah were judges for the event, scrutinising hundreds of entries in 16 categories.

And in the local newspaper category they singled out ‘Colour of Money’ from the Birmingham Post, an article exploring the value of the ‘brown pound’, and ‘Body of Work’, a series of articles from the Yorkshire Evening Post about issues such as immigration, the holocaust and campaigning against far right groups such as the BNP.

The winners of each category will be announced on Tuesday, June 28 at the Curzon Mayfair, followed by a VIP after-party at Just St James.

The event aims to encourage informed coverage of race relations, diversity and multiculturalism.

CRE chair Trevor Phillips said: “The quality of entries this year has been excellent with many journalists, programme and film makers producing some outstanding material that has contributed towards the British public’s appreciation of race relations.

“Media representation of ethnic minority communities has improved considerably since RIMA was launched 13 years ago, though issues such as integration, Islamophobia and migration from the expanded EU and the continued discrimination faced by Gypsies and Travellers still present huge challenges to all who work in the media.

“These awards matter because balanced representation of ethnic minority communities in the media matters. The industry has a key part to play in this, it is a powerful tool and can go a long way towards helping to build an integrated society.”
