Regional 'first' as Journal's Jane scoops writing prize

Newcastle Journal journalist Jane Hall has beaten competition from the nationals to scoop a top award.

Features editor Jane won the British Insurance Brokers’ Association Journalist of the Year award 2003 at a ceremony in London – becoming the first regional journalist to pick up the overall title in the award’s 24-year history.

Jane (right) said: “I am absolutely delighted and stunned to receive the award. It has come as a complete shock.

“I am particularly pleased I am the first ever regional journalist to win the overall award.”

Jane’s winning feature, entitled “Act of God hard to find today”, looked at insurance companies’ attitudes to natural disasters such as lightning and flooding.

The same piece also won her the regional award, which she has previously won three times.

BIBA chief executive Eric Galbraith said: “Jane receives this award in recognition of her in-depth coverage of the industry and for the help she has provided to consumers with insurance issues.

“Jane should be praised for her consistent coverage of consumer issues, and her eloquent writing style, which serves to make the topic of insurance accessible to her readers.

“Her pieces offer consumers a great degree of advice and support, following very detailed investigation and research.”

The awards aim to reward journalists for helping to further the consumer’s understanding of insurance issues, which is potentially a rather dry subject.
