Race awareness wins regional staff a place on the shortlist

Regional press staff are among those shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The Coventry Evening Telegraph’s Paul Barry and editorial staff from the Bradford Telegraph & Argus have both been nominated in the regional and local newspaper category of the 2003 Race In the Media Awards.

The annual event run by the Commission for Racial Equality aims to encourage more informed coverage of race relations, diversity and multiculturalism, and the winners will be those judged to have made a significant contribution to this.

Coventry Evening Telegraph feature writer Paul Barry has been nominated for his coverage of the sensitive issue of asylum seekers and refugees.

Paul co-ordinated a five-day series of features about asylum seekers and refugees in Coventry, which revealed that at least 3,500 asylum seekers and refugees had arrived in Coventry in two years.

The newspaper’s health reporter Karen Hambridge and former education reporter Nigel Hart also contributed to the series, explaining the challenges faced by doctors and schools.

Meanwhile staff from the Bradford Telegraph & Argus have been nominated for their coverage of the anniversary of the Bradford Riots.

The winner will be announced on Friday, April 11, at a gala luncheon at the Savoy Hotel in London, where the keynote speaker will be Alastair Campbell, the Prime Minister’s press secretary.

The awards will be presented by Jon Snow from Channel 4 News and Sky News’s Lisa Aziz.

Awards will also handed out to staff and publications from throughout the media industry, from major broadcasters and national newspapers to small independent television and radio companies, and specialist magazines, together with those from the world of entertainment.
