Race awards set for revamp

The popular Race in the Media Awards are being put on hold ready for a redesign and re-launch next year.

The event, hosted by the Commission for Racial Equality, rewards all areas of the media for helping public understanding of race or cultural issues.

It has been running for 11 years now but the Commission has decided to re-assign award categories to take account of changes in the media industry – and give the initiative a fresh now look.

This means there will be no Race in the Media Awards for 2004 – but next summer will see the re-launch.

In the most recent awards the Coventry Evening Telegraph was named Regional and Local Newspaper of the Year for its features on asylum seekers and refugees in the city.

Judges voted feature writer Paul Barry’s work as the best in its field after he co-ordinated an “important” series of articles on the topic.

The awards also attract entries from broadcasters, magazines, PR companies and national newspapers.
