Race awards relaunched

The Race in the Media Awards are back after a two-year break.

Journalists and media owners are being invited to get their entries in to the refreshed and re-energised competition.

The awards are designed to reward and honour those who have made a significant contribution to public appreciation of race relations and integration.

Sixteen categories include:

  • Consumer Magazine
  • Film
  • Local Newspaper
  • Media Organisation of the Year
  • Media Personality of the Year
  • National Newspaper
  • New Media
  • Radio Drama
  • Radio Factual
  • Radio News
  • Specialist Magazine
  • Television Drama
  • Television Factual
  • Television News
  • Television Soaps
  • Youth

The organisers say the awards are now more alert to world events and current issues affecting the diversity of 21st century Britain, including community conflict and integration, Islamophobia and migration from the expanded EU, which all present major challenges to those who work in the media.

The remit includes reporting on less visible ethnic minority communities such as gypsies and travellers or those from Eastern Europe.

Commission for Racial Equality chairman Trevor Phillips said: “Extensive progress has been made by the media on covering race issues over the past 13 years and we want to continue to reward and honour the best.

“Race discrimination has not gone away and there is still a great deal of progress to be made by some sections of the media.

“We must encourage all media to consider the effect that language and tone has on inciting racial tensions in communities. They have a key role in how we relate to each other.”

The closing date for entries is Monday March 14.

All entries must have been published in a recognised national, regional or trade publication, or broadcast or intended for theatrical screening in the UK between January 1 2004 and January 31, 2005.

Awards will be presented on June 28 at an evening ceremony at the Curzon Mayfair.
