'Quality' papers are rewarded

The Derby Evening Telegraph and Leicester Mercury have been rewarded for their printing quality in a prestigious worldwide competition.

The two regional newspapers are among 50 titles to have been awarded membership to the Ifra International Newspaper Colour Quality Club 2004-06 – and are the only two UK publications to have made the grade.

Before awarding membership, judges looked not only at the final finish of the newspaper but also the quality of the pictures and stories in it and the processes through which they are managed.

Membership of the Ifra club lasts two years, after which time all previous winners have to apply again, and this year 180 newspaper titles from 34 countries were entered.

It is the first time that the Derby Evening Telegraph has been awarded membership, with the Leicester Mercury previously joining the club in 1998.

Other winners this year include the Irish Independent, the Boston Globe, The New York Times and the Toronto Star.
