Photo contest offers £2,000 top prize

A photo competition open to people throughout the Commonwealth is offering £2,000 as its top prize.

The Commonwealth Photographic Awards were last year topped by Canadian John Lehmann for his picture that, according to the judges, “could not get closer to life”.

  • “Spontaneous expressions of
sheer joy” won over the judges
  • This year’s theme is “Youth”, and entrants are invited by the Commonwealth Press Union to interpret the theme as freely as they like.

Photos will be judged on both technical quality and interpretation of the theme and in addition to the main prize there are cash prizes for regional winners.

Most of the winning photographs will be featured in a television programme based on the Awards and made available for broadcast in over 40 countries around the Commonwealth.

And there will also be several exhibitions taking place in Commonwealth cities featuring the winning images.

A special category has been created for the 2004 Awards for children aged between 12 and 18 on September 1, 2004.

The prize will be announced at a later date. The same entry details apply but your date of birth should be stated.

Entries should be sent to: Photoawards 2004, Commonwealth Press Union, 17 Fleet Street, London EC4Y 1AA, or e-mail: [email protected].

The final deadline for entries is May 30. To read full details on Awards and to view previous winning images, visit the website www.cpu.org.uk.
