The Oxford Times was named Paid-for Weekly Newspaper of the Year at the Weekly Newspaper Awards.
The judges felt the newspaper was an “unbeatable package” that showed “value for money”. They also noted the publication’s redesign and its circulation.
Kent on Sunday won the Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year category. Judges said the publication was a “fantastic free paper” and a “good all round package”.
Tindle Newspapers’ chairman Sir Ray Tindle’s long press career was acknowledged with the presentation of the Clacksons’ Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Weekly Newspaper Industry.
Sir Ray, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, could not attend the ceremony but sent a letter of acceptance saying he was honoured to receive the award.
The News Guardian, Whitley Bay, also had a good night. The paper won Best Free Weekly Newspaper in North West, North East and Yorkshire and picked up a certificate of Certificate of Merit in the special award Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year. Its photographer Gemma Marriner won Best Photographer from a free weekly newspaper.
Other highlights among the winners from the evening included:
David Newell, director of The Newspaper Society, said: “The Weekly Newspaper Awards offer the opportunity to highlight the vibrant and creative work of the UK’s local weekly press. It was good to see the awards so well supported this year with the event selling out in record time.”
