Northern Ireland prize winners celebrate

Northern Ireland’s top journalists and broadcasters have been recognised at this year’s CIPR/BT Press and Broadcast Awards.

Topping the list of winners was the Irish News, which was crowned Daily Newspaper of the Year and also clinched the overall Newspaper of the Year title, while the Weekly Newspaper of the Year award went to the Impartial Reporter.

Judges said the Irish News was “a confident newspaper, which obviously understands its readers and its community”, while they praised the Impartial Reporter for demonstrating “good cross-community reporting and great care in servicing its readers”.

Marie Louise McCrory from the Irish News also picked up a prize, scooping the News Journalist of the Year title, Ruth Loney from the Lurgan Mail was named Weekly News Journalist of the Year and Gail Walker from the Belfast Telegraph won Feature Writer of the Year.

More than 400 people gathered at the Europa Hotel in Belfast to see the winners announced, and organisers said the competition had demonstrated the impressive standards being set in Northern Ireland’s changing media sector.

Other winners included Peter Morrison from the Sunday World, who was crowned Newspaper Photographer of the Year, Gavin Mairs from the Belfast Telegraph who was named Sports Journalist of the Year, Sharon O’Neill from the Irish News who picked up Specialist Journalist of the Year and Belfast Telegraph Digital which was named Website of the Year.
