Newspaper Internet division comes in for praise

A ground-breaking educational website, produced by Northcliffe Newspapers’ Internet division, has won more praise – this time at the annual Association of Online Publishers awards.

www.headlinehistory.co.uk – developed by Northcliffe Electronic Publishing – received a Special Mention after being shortlisted and highly commended for AOP’s Innovation 2004 award.

The judges said: “Headlinehistory.co.uk is a great idea and we highly commend its originality and creativity.”

The award was won by T-Mobile’s News Express service. Northcliffe was the only regional newspaper publisher shortlisted for the AOP awards which were dominated by national publishers like Conde Nast UK, the Financial Times, the Guardian, Reed Business Information and VNU Business Publications.

Last month, Headline History won all three categories that it entered in the Newspaper Society’s Digital Media Awards.

The project was commissioned by Culture Online, part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, from an original idea developed by NEP.

The site aims to inspire seven to 11-year-olds to learn about history and literacy through the medium of virtual, online, historical newspapers.

Content, about the Romans, Tudors, Victorians and World War Two, is currently heavily focused on the East Midlands. But the next stage of development, in early 2005, will see more content added for all the other English regions.
