Media group wins top award for Games sponsorship

Guardian Media Group has won a top award for its role as the official media sponsor of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The group, which publishes several regional titles including the Manchester Evening News, won the corporate award at the Hollis Sponsorship Awards which recognise the most effective use of sponsorship.

As official media sponsor, the group co-produced the official daily newspaper of the Games, which detailed every event and medal.

It also produced a separate daily village newspaper, Village Voice, for the 6,000 athletes that took part.

The award was presented to group chief executive Bob Phillis at a ceremony in London.

He said: “This is a tribute to the combined efforts of staff across GMG and underlines the scale of the major community initiatives which were based on the Games and are still continuing today.”

Judges were looking for evidence of the ‘big idea’, for innovation, for appropriateness and synergy, for creative and maximised exploitation and proof on paper that the campaign had met its business objectives.

The group beat competition from Barclays PLC, UBS and Unilever.
