Journalists rewarded for their work as trainees

Worthing Herald reporter Chris Taylor was among the winners at Highbury College’s annual journalism awards.

Chris, (27), won The Frank Warner Award for special achievement by a newspaper journalism student from the Portsmouth college.

He was the first on his course to get a job and the first to get his 100wpm shorthand.

And his wife Vicky, who joined him at the ceremony, said: “Finding out that the lecturers thought so highly of Chris was amazing. He had to work really hard but it all paid off.”

Solent News Agency reporter Lydia Forbes-Manson, (24), won The James Arlott Memorial Award for top newspaper trainee in 2004.

She said: “I’m stunned to get the award. It was a lovely surprise.”

Top magazine journalist was 24-year-old Jamie Carter who is now deputy assistant editor with Highbury Entertainment London.

Lorraine White, (23), from Worthing’s Splash FM, received the Karen Woods award for special achievement by a broadcast journalism student.

Marian Henbest, (25), won The Wave 105 award for top broadcast journalist.

Each of the winners was presented with an engraved tankard and a cheque for £100.
