Impressive images earn awards

Impressive images have earned two more media awards for the Evening Press at York.

The imagination and skill of photographer Frank Dwyer and graphic designer Lisa Cook impressed the judges in the Yorkshire Press Awards – and each took home a prestigious award from the ceremony in Wakefield.

Frank scooped the Photographer of the Year award while Lisa was named Graphic Designer of the Year for the third year running.

  • Frank’s winning work
  • The judges said of the photographic award: “There were some stunning images in this year’s entries, which showed the range of immense photographic talent to be found in newspapers throughout the county.

“It was a very difficult decision for the judges but one portfolio seemed to sum up Yorkshire’s year of foot and mouth, floods and the Selby train crash better than any other.

“A top quality set of pictures in a highly competitive category.”

Of the graphic designer entries the judges said: “We live in a very visual world and it is essential that newspapers look beyond words and photographs to get their information across.

“There was one clear, deserved winner. Complex information was presented in a lively, clear and interesting way.

“The beauty of these graphics is that they were not reliant purely on the Macintosh… but on a mix of artistic and technical skill.”

It is the third time Lisa has won this award. She said: “I didn’t think I could do it again – I’m really pleased.”

The latest awards come at the end of a successful year for the Evening Press.

In October the paper scooped three awards in a national newspaper competition run by Newsquest, Britain’s biggest regional newspaper publisher.

These were Daily Newspaper of the Year, Best Photographer for Garry Atkinson and Best Website.
