Imperial College takes top prizes at student media awards

Imperial College London did the double at this year’s Guardian Student Media Awards, scooping the two top prizes at the event.

The college’s Rupert Neate won the top prize of Overall Student Journalist of the Year, and will complete a six week work placement at the Guardian. He was also runner up in the Student Reporter of the Year category.

And Imperial College’s newspaper ‘Felix’ won Student Newspaper of the Year.

There were also wins for London’s Goldsmiths College, which was awarded Student Publication Design of the Year for its newspaper ‘Smiths’, University College London won Student Small Budget Publication of the Year for its magazine ‘The Cheese Grater’, and Rohin Frances of St Georges, University of London, won Student Diversity Writer of the Year.

The University of Warwick had a successful night, with two of its students scooping prizes.

Tancred Newbury won Student Travel Writer of the Year, and David O’Kelly picked up Student Sports Writer of the Year.

Its website, Warwick Boar, won Student Website of the Year.

All the winners received their awards from TV presenter Lauren Laverne at a ceremony in central London.

This year’s judges included: Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian; Adam Boulton, political editor, Sky News; Jon Snow, presenter, Channel 4 News; Mark Frith, editor, Heat; Fiona McIntosh, editor in chief, Grazia; Katie Derham, presenter, ITN; Tim Lovejoy, Soccer AM; Alison Pearson, Daily Mail columnist and Dave Gorman, comedian.

Now in their 28th year, the awards recognise and reward the very best student journalists, editors and photographers.
