Herald offers students chance to get work in print

Student journalists are being given the chance to see their work in print, with the launch of a new competition set up by the Sunday Herald and Amnesty International.

The winner will have their article published in the Scottish Sunday paper, and will also be invited to its offices to see its journalists at work.

Amnesty is campaigning to improve the protection and promotion of the human rights of refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and internally displaced people, and focused in particular on the representation of refugees in the Scottish media.

The competition will promote accurate and balanced reporting on asylum, and is searching for the best article on the theme of ‘asylum and persecution’ by a student in Scotland.

Entries should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words, and the winning piece will be published at the beginning of Refugee Week 2005 (20-26 June).

Judges will be David Milne, deputy editor of the Sunday Herald, and Rosemary Burnett, programme director for Amnesty International in Scotland.

To enter download an entry form from www.amnesty.org.uk/scotland/asylum. You must be currently studying in Scotland.

The deadline for entries is Friday, May 20.
