Herald man scoops top sports award

The Herald’s Doug Gillon has scooped a national award for his sports writing.

The Glasgow-based journalist was named Regional Sports Writer of the Year at the annual British Sports Journalism Awards.

The event is organised by Sport England in conjunction with the Sports Writers Association.

Judges said they were particularly impressed with the variety of articles that Doug submitted.

They said: “His range of articles was superb. His sports writing was excellent on subjects as diverse as judo and athletics and his article on the forgotten runner was outstanding.”

The event recognises the best sports journalism among national and regional newspapers, together with news agencies and freelances.

The winners were announced during a ceremony at the Portman Radisson SAS Hotel in London – and Doug’s prize made him the only journalist from the regional press to pick up a top prize.

Other awards went to Patrick Collins of the Mail on Sunday, who was crowned Sports Journalist and Sports Feature Writer of the Year; Michael Parkinson of the Daily Telegraph, who was named Sports Columnist of the Year; Matt Dickinson of The Times who was named Special Correspondent of the Year and Harry Harris from the Daily Express who won best Sports News Story.

In the photography categories Clive Mason from Getty Images was named Sports Photographer of the Year; Mark Leech from Offside Sports Photography won the prize for Sports News Picture; Tom Jenkins from the Guardian and Observer scooped the Sport for All Picture of the Year award; Mike Hewitt of Getty Images won best Sports Picture Portfolio and Odd Andersen from Agence France Presse won the David Worthy Memorial Award.
