Herald honours journalism talent of the future

David Crow, from Glasgow University, has been named Student Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Student Press Awards.

The award was one of four won by the university at the event, which is organised by The Herald, and as the winner David will enjoy a four-week paid placement at the paper as well as receiving £500 and a trophy.

Herald editor Mark Douglas-Home praised David for the high standard of his entry, and said that his article investigating slum landlords was an example of campaigning journalism at its best.

He said: “These awards are an important showcase for the best in student journalism, and we are extremely grateful to the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the main sponsor of the event, for sharing our belief in the importance of nurturing future talent and in recognising good writing.”

The Glasgow University’s newspaper, The Guardian, also won best newspaper and best newspaper/magazine design. Jenny Munro, from Glasgow University Magazine, picked up the best features writer award.

Alistair Gray, from Edinburgh University’s Student newspaper, won best news writer and James Smith, also from Student, won best sports writer.

The best college publication was won by the Cardonald Courier, produced by Cardonald College.

HND Practical Journalism course co-ordinator Martin Boyle said: “I’m immensely proud of the students for their efforts and it is great to see them rewarded.

“Hopefully this is further proof that Cardonald College leads the way in producing some of the best new journalistic talent in Scotland.

“Thanks to the Herald and the SQA, and also to everyone at Cardonald who has helped with the production of the newspaper throughout this year.”
