Group focuses on photo talent

The best photographic talent from the Trinity Mirror group has been recognised at a group-wide awards scheme.

Winners included photographers from the Birmingham Evening Mail, Newcastle Evening Chronicle and Western Mail, as staff from Trinity Mirror’s regional titles competed against their national newspaper colleagues.

The overall prize for Picture of the Year was awarded to Femi Omole of the Enfield Gazette, for his photograph of Prince Charles visiting a Mill Hill junior school (below).

He said: “I feel great! I never expected I’d win it and it’s a big shock considering I wasn’t intending to enter in the first place – my editor forced me!

“When I was going through all my photos, I chose that one and can’t believe it’s won.”

The Trinity Mirror Photographic Awards were open to photographers working on any of the group’s 250-plus titles, and the event attracted more than 1,300 entries.

The winners were announced at a ceremony at The Mirror’s headquaters in Canary Wharf, and prizes were presented by Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey.

The winning photographs ranged from news images such as the Queen Mother lying in state to glossy studio pictures and action-packed sports shots from the Ryder Cup and the FA Cup Final.

The was also a non-professional category, open to all Trinity Mirror employees, which was won for the second year running by Birmingham’s Jason Skarratt (picture above), who picked up a Fuji digital camera.
