Exclusive scoops award

A journalist at The Herald in Glasgow has won a top award at the 16th annual Workworld Media Awards.

Deputy business editor Ian McConnell was handed the Scoop of the Year Award for his exclusive story which broke the news of the Bank of Scotland’s merger with the Halifax.

A few hours after the story was published the banks were forced to announce to the Stock Exchange that they were in discussions.

Ian said: “I’m delighted. The award was a pleasant surprise.

“Most of the other winners were London-based so it was good to win it for The Herald.”

The awards – formerly The Industrial Journalism Awards – are run by The Work Foundation and aim to recognise excellence in workplace, management and business journalism.

The winners were announced at Le Meridien Piccadilly, London. To find out more visit www.theworkfoundation.com.

  • Ian’s exclusive story about the merger also helped him to win the titles of BT Scotland Business/e-commerce Journalist of the Year and BT UK Regional Business/e-commerce Journalist of the Year earlier this year.
