Entries open for journalism awards

Entries are now being invited for the 24th Tom Cordner North East Press Awards, one of the strongest and longest-running recognition of professional excellence in UK journalism.

The “Cordners” are 25 awards for news, features, specialist writing, lay-out, photography and overall publication quality.

They sustain their original mission – to recognise and encourage contemporary excellence among fellow journalists in the region, and at the same time acknowledge the memory of former colleagues.

They began as a grass-roots tribute to the Hartlepool Mail’s news editor Tom Cordner who died young in 1976.

The latest tribute is to Tony Dumphy, head of editorial production at the Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough, whose name has been given this year to the Splash Subbing Award, which he won for the third time a few weeks before his death in September.

The competition is open to staff and freelances for work published in 2004 in North East papers and magazines. The deadline for entries is March 14 and awards night is May 14.

Entries should be sent to Alison Steel, Cordner North East Press Awards, c/o Public Affairs Office, University of Sunderland, Edinburgh Building, City Campus, Chester Road, Sunderland SR1 3SD. (Entry inquiries to Alison on 0191 515 3168.)
