Echo award scheme encourages young talent

Four Merseyside youngsters are to spend the day in the Liverpool Echo newsroom after impressing judges of the paper’s Young Journalist of the Year competition.

Winners Sarah Foley, (14), and Stephanie Johnson, (18), and runners-up Graeme Dolphin, (16), and Jessica Bernstein, (14), beat competition from secondary school pupils across Merseyside, with articles about a local issues of their choice.

And now they will be able to get top tips from professional journalists as well as seeing their articles in print.

Echo editor Mark Dickinson said he had been very impressed at the standard of entries.

He said: “The quality of the writing was inspiring and it is great to see how many talented and creative young people there are here in Merseyside.

“It will be a wonderful experience for them to spend some time in the Echo newsroom to help them develop their journalism skills even further.”

Winners Sarah and Stephanie have also received a handheld computer and a laptop for their school – although as Stephanie has already left school, she has been allowed to keep the laptop too!
