Duo win awards for photos and features

An Evening Chronicle photographer and features writer have won top awards for their work.

Photographer Dave Charlton won Picture of the Year at the recent Trinity Mirror Photographic Awards, while writer Beth Neil has been handed the Rosemary Goodchild Award, run by the Family Planning Association.

Dave beat competition from national and regional newspapers to win the best picture category and was handed £2,500 in travel vouchers.

His winning group shot showed young dancers from the Clann Na Ngael Irish dance school, Seghill, during their striking routine.

Dave, (right), said: “I was really pleased when they announced I had won the awards and I’m looking forward to spending the travel vouchers. It’s a really happy picture and it’s pleasing to the eye, but most of the skill is down to the dancers.”

Beth Neil, (left), heard she had won her award – and £500 – for an article she wrote on a sexually transmitted disease clinic at Newcastle General Hospital.

Beth, who has worked at the Chronicle for just under a year, faced competition from national newspapers and magazines to scoop the award, which aims to reward journalists for informing the public and promoting good sexual health.

The award and cash will be handed to her on May 11 at a ceremony in the House of Lords in London.

She said: “I was really pleased and very surprised when I found out. I enjoyed writing the article and thought it was interesting. I tried to make the piece quite witty and they told me they liked that tone, as it made the article stand out.”
