Deadline looms for Local Reporting Awards

The deadline for this year’s Prince’s Trust Local Reporting Awards is fast-approaching, with just two weeks left to enter.

Regional newspapers must have submitted their entries for the competition, run in association with the Newspaper Society, by July 11.

This year’s awards have been split into two categories to give professionals and non-professionals the chance to win the top prize of an interview with Cat Deeley.

The Local Reporting Awards recognise excellence in local reporting by people under the age of 30, who write about the valuable work carried out by young people at community level.

To enter, articles must have been published in a regional newspaper during Local Newspaper Week and be about young people and the positive contribution they make to the community.

Each year newspapers put stories forward for the awards by running their own competitions for people in their local community to write an article – or they send their own entries off from young reporters who have written an outstanding article.

The judges will be looking for whether the story reflects community spirit in a positive light, how inspiring they are, the clarity of writing, originality, the ability to engage the reader and how thought provoking the feature is.

Last year’s competition winner was Andrew Hebden, a trainee reporter at the Telegraph and Argus in Bradford.

He was presented with his award by the Prince of Wales and Gary Lineker at an award ceremony at St James’ Palace.
