Cream of student journalism is rewarded

The winners of this year’s National Student Media Awards, run by the National Union of Students and the Independent Newspaper group, have been announced.

Heading the list of honours was Leeds University’s Leeds Student, which was voted best student newspaper.

Judges praised the newspaper for its pursuit of controversial stories such as the campaign by the British National Party to recruit members from among Leeds students.

The newspaper’s editorial team received their trophy during a celebration at the Globe Theatre in London, which was hosted by television presenter June Sarpong.

Other winners, chosen from an original 400 entries, included the University of Nottingham’s Impact, which was named Best Student Magazine and Smiths, from Goldsmiths College, which collected the prize for Best Small Budget Student Publication.
