Daily Newspaper of the Year

The Evening Star, Ipswich has won the coveted BT London and Northern Home Counties Daily Newspaper of the year award.

The judges praised the paper for its tireless campaigning on behalf of the community it serves. They said it was “brash, bright and lots of fun but could also be serious, campaigning successfully and tirelessly for the community it serves which is fortunate to have such a champion.”

Editor Nigel Pickover was unable to collect the award which was instead given to Deputy Editor Peter Blyth.

The single highly commended prize went to “the new kids on the block” at the London-based Metro which, since starting in March 1999, has taken the capital by storm. Editor Ian Mcgregor collected the award.
