BAFTA-winning website poised for international honour

A BAFTA award-winning website from the Northcliffe publishing group is waiting to hear if it has scooped its first international honour.

www.headlinehistory.co.uk – devised and created by Northcliffe Electronic Publishing, the internet division of the Northcliffe Newspaper Group – is the only British website nominated in the Broadband category of the 2005 Webby Awards.

It’s also the only nominee in all 60 categories from a British regional newspaper publishing group.

NEP project manager Elaine Pritchard said: “There were more than 4,000 entries to the Webbys this year – so to be one of just five sites shortlisted in the Broadband category is a great thrill.”

  • Katie Haywood who appears as Queen Elizabeth I on Headline History
  • Winners will be unveiled on Tuesday May 3 and honoured at a gala celebration on June 6 at Gotham Hall in New York City.

The Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 500-member body of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.

The Academy includes members such as musicians Beck and David Bowie, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and The Body Shop president Anita Roddick.

The Webby Awards presents two honours in each category: The Webby Award and The People’s Voice Award. While members of The Academy select the nominees for both awards, the public determines the winners of The People’s Voice Awards by voting for the sites that they believe to be the best in each category.

Today is the last day to cast your vote for headlinehistory.co.uk or any of the other nominees. Go to http://pv.webbyawards.com to register and vote.

Headline History is a classroom teaching tool for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils which uses online interactive newspapers set in historical eras to bring history to life in a unique way.

It has already scooped three awards for its East Midlands pilot in last year’s Newspaper Society Digital Media Awards and won the top prize in the Children’s Learning category at the Interactive BAFTA awards last month, when it also launched with full national content for every region in England.

The site has been commissioned and funded by Culture Online, part of the Department for Culture Media and Sport.
