Awards scheme launched

A new awards scheme, designed to recognise the achievements of journalists and photographers in the West Midlands, has been launched by the Birmingham Press Club.

The West Midlands Media Awards 2002 are open to all forms of media, from newspapers to broadcasting and the Internet.

The event, which will culminate in a ceremony at Birmingham’s Burlington Hotel on October 16, will see 13 awards handed out – including one for the person deemed ‘Irritant of the Year’.

The other categories are: scoop of the year, headline of the year; news photographer of the year; sports photographer of the year; sports journalist of the year; daily and weekly news reporter of the year; newcomer of the year; business journalist of the year; PR professional of the year; best use of technology; and newspaper of the year.

Andrew Sparrow (pictured), chairman of Birmingham Press Club, said: “There hasn’t been an awards scheme of this kind in the region for a number of years now, and we thought it was high time there was.”

The event will be open to the greater West Midlands area including Shropshire in the west, Derby in the north, Nottingham, Coventry, Worcester and Leicester.

Details of how to enter will be announced shortly.
