Award entries go under the scrutiny of the judges

Eight newspapers are in with a chance of being crowned Newspaper of theYear at the West Midlands Media Awards.

It has been revealed that the Tamworth Herald, The Sentinel, SentinelSunday, Coventry Evening Telegraph, Shrewsbury Chronicle, Sunday Mercury,Birmingham Post and Birmingham Evening Mail have all made the competitionshortlist and will fight it out for the coveted title.

The award is one of 13 that will be given at a ceremony at the ICC inBirmingham on April 22.

Prizes will also be handed out for:

  • News Reporter Of The Year (Daily);
  • News Reporter Of The Year (Weekly);
  • News Photographer Of The Year;
  • Sports Photographer Of The Year;
  • Sports Journalist Of The Year;
  • Feature Writer Of The Year;
  • Business Journalist Of The Year;
  • Newcomer Of The Year;
  • Magazine Of The Year;
  • Scoop Of The Year;
  • Headline Of The Year;
  • The Trevor Roberts Award.

    A cash prize of £1,000 will be handed out to the winner of ‘Scoop of theYear’. All other category winners, apart from Irritant of the Year andNewspaper of the Year, will receive £250.

    There are more than 100 individual journalists on the shortlist forprizes, from daily and weekly newspapers across the region.

    The panel of judges was headed by former Birmingham Evening Mail editorIan Dowell, and included BBC Midlands Today presenter Kay Alexander; CentralNews editor Dan Barton; Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s pressand PR manager John Lamb; Business and Finance Midlands editor FredBromwich; freelance photographer Tony Flanagan and Sam Warnock, head ofmarketing communications for Visit Heart of England.

    There is one extra award as yet undecided – those attending the ceremony,at which former Tory MP David Mellor is to be guest speaker, will also beable to vote for the person or organisation deemed to have been ‘Irritant ofthe Year’.

  • The Birmingham Press Club, which organises the event, has announced that – due to the huge interest in the event from publications across the Midlands – next year’s competition will be renamed the ‘Midlands Media Awards’.
