North-west reporter says goodbye after 42-year career

A career in newspapers spanning four decades has come to an emotional end.

Terry Horne, from the North West Evening Mail, spent 21 years working as a printer before retraining as a reporter in 1986.

Terry, (64), worked at the paper's Ulverston district office in south Cumbrian and said goodbye to colleagues at a farewell ceremony with the town's mayor.

He received a commemorative cup bearing the town's crest in recognition of his service to the community.

Terry said: "I have been looking forward to retiring for some time but when the day finally dawned I realised how much I am going to miss my job as the Ulverston and South Lakes reporter.

"Being a journalist has been a wonderful experience and I have really enjoyed all the excitement involved with the job – no two days are the same and you never know what's just around the corner.

"I shall miss the contact with work colleagues and friends who I've made across the whole of South Cumbria.

"Special thanks must go to Jennifer Snell, who has been a wonderful workmate, so supportive and helpful, both to me and every other reporter passing through the Ulverston office.

"I was taken completely by surprise when Jennifer and my reporting colleague Nicola (Park) organised a lovely retirement gathering with the mayor, town clerk and my wife Marjorie.

"It was an emotional occasion I must admit and it's something I shall fondly remember for the rest of my life."
