The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication provides graduates and postgraduates with the practical skills and intellectual breadth to move into media jobs in intensely competitive markets, with 20,000 new jobs in journalism expected by 2010 and similarly strong growth predicted in radio, television and public relations.

Our courses, combining practice-based education with cutting edge theory, equip students to enter this vibrant and demanding world. We provide a wide undergraduate programme with specialist practical pathways in journalism, broadcasting and public relations backed by a range of theoretical options in media law, politics, economics and history.
At Masters Level, an extensive portfolio of specialist courses covers journalism and communication. The majority of staff in the department are research active and produce internationally recognised work leading to scores of 5 in the last three official Research Assessment Exercises (RAE).
